One of our best-selling natural beauty products is our natural soap made from shea butter.
At Island Soap & Candle Works, we pride ourselves on using many all-natural, botanical extracts and essential oils in our products many of which can be found growing in Hawaii. However, we also source natural ingredients from around the world to bring the best natural bath products to our customers. For example, the tree which bears a nut from which the shea butter we use is derived is in fact not native to Hawaii, but a native of the African savannah.
Its range is extensive: the shea tree grows in a wide belt across the middle of the African continent from the west coast nations of Mali and Ghana all the way to the foothills of the Ethiopian highlands in the east. There are also some shea nut production areas in Turkey and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean off the east coast of Spain.
Shea butter, which is obtained from the fruit of the shea tree, is so rich in nutrients and emollients that we decided it was worth importing in order to create our own recipe of natural shea butter soap. In the region of Africa where shea trees grow in abundance, shea butter is used to treat a wide range of skin disorders and injuries; traditional healers in Africa use it to treat rashes, scar tissue, minor scratches and other skin injuries. Shea butter is also an excellent moisturizer.

At Island Soap & Candle Works, our natural shea butter soap is made the way Hawaiian soap has been made for many many years, with a base of palm and coconut oil, along with fruit and floral extracts and fragrances. Finally, we add in the native-to-Africa pure shea butter to complete our special recipe.
Once this natural soap is made, we cut it into bars and allow it to cure in the gentle Hawaiian tradewinds before it is sold.
