Glycerin, a colorless, viscous liquid, is an organic compound comprised mainly of a fatty, oily acid. It is an effective solvent, making it useful for cleansing, but it is also a “humectant.” This means it inherently attracts moisture in the same manner a conductive metal, such as copper, attracts electricity. This characteristic gives glycerin soaps their powerful moisturizing capabilities.
Glycerin is a by-product that is produced naturally during the soap making process. Because of its valuable ability to soften and smooth skin, conventional soap making companies often remove it from their products and use it instead in items that generate higher profits, such as lotions and hair care treatments. This allows them to sell their lower quality, harsher soap at a lower price. (Of course, we leave all the naturally occurring glycerin in our handmade soaps.)

How is Glycerin Bar Soap Made?
The process begins with a soap base, which is partially dissolved in a concentrated alcohol solution and heated until a clear, jelly-like consistency is achieved. The next step is to add the desired oils, fragrances and colors. Popular ingredients include coconut oil, lavender, beeswax, oatmeal, shea butter and chamomile. The mixture is then poured into a mold and left to set and dry. The result is one of the highest quality, most popular moisturizing soaps available.
